Happy Holidays

This week has been a very special week for our classroom family. Giving, caring, and sharing were the common words shared this week. Some of the activities we were involved in are listed below:
1. Stocking Stuffers - on Monday the kids made their own personal stockings. We hung them under our board with care ;) We spent time throughout the week writing each other notes of good wishes. The kids requested that we make stockings for everyone who help us throughout our everyday lives at BCE. The students weren't allowed to look in their own stockings until today. The students delivered the stockings around the school and then we sat on the carpet together and opened our stockings. I loved watching them read their notes. Genuine smiles and thank yours were exchanged.
2. Surprise Gift - the students were each given a piece of paper to draw a gift that they either wanted to give or receive. Below they were to describe the gift. We covered the gift with wrapping paper and hung them up with bags for everyone to guess their gift. Throughout the week students guessed each others gifts.
3. Snowflakes for a good cause- Recently some sadness has overcome a school in our nation. Several classrooms joined together making snowflakes for a good cause. I told the students that their snowflakes were going to welcome some students into their school after the New Year. These were shipped today and will be dangling from the ceiling in a very special school.
4. Christmas readers - I LOVE Christmas books!!!!!! I have so many to enjoy that the kids came up with the idea of inviting a kinder class to come to our room to enjoy them with us. It was great seeing them reading and getting involved in the magic of the season.

Below are the pictures taken throughout his week.

Read-a-Thon

Today November 20th we're having a special event call Read-a-Thon. It's a fun reading activity that we do in school every year. We mostly spend the day reading, relaxing, and having fun. Today we started the day out when Mr. Kinsley came to our class room to read to us about the Florida gators. Our goal for Read-a-Thon is to read the books that we have raised money to read. The money that is raised helps us buy materials for our classroom. Throughout the day they announce the winners of students who have won a book from a drawing. So now that I've told you what Read-a-Thon is all about, are you ready to read?

Peer Mediator

Zach was chosen for Peer Mediator. This program is run by Mrs. Green our school Counselor. When students are needing help through a problem, they can go to a peer mediation group. This group helps them understand their problem and how they can handle the situation themselves.

I earned the certificate of the peer mediation training because I went through the training and was always on time and never missed a mediation training. I always listened and tried my hardest to stay on track and always finish my work.

Our Phil Harmonic Field Trip

On September 20th was are first field trip to the Phil harmonic. When we got there oh boy was there a lot of people. We saw buses, students, and lots of traffic. Finally we got in our seats. Then the lights dimmed and the conductor came and introduced himself. He said, "You guys will be hearing music that represents cars, trains, buses, planes, motorcycles and trucks." The music sounded like angels playing instruments right next to us and we where in heaven. Some of us were so relaxed that we didn't want to leave. Overall our trip was wonderful. We were glad to get this experience.

Type to Learn

The students are working on enhancing their typing skills in Technology class.  Type to Learn is an amazing program that you can access from home to help them work on their typing skills.  This is not a homework requirement, but a suggested link to help their typing fluency.  The students will need to have very fluent typing skills in their future education.

Bobcat of the Week

Awesome job!!! I am so pleased to have Beatriz as part of our class. She is an amazing young lady. Here is why she thinks she received the award...

This week I got chosen to be a student of the week. I think I got chosen to be a student of the week because I think that I have done my work and my homework and turned them in on time. I have also tried helping classmates who need help. My final reason why I think I got chosen is because I think I have worked hard to earn it. These are my reason why I think I got chosen to be a student of the week.

Twitter in our Classroom

In today's society, social networking is an important part of life.  Twitter is one social network that we are mimicing in our classroom.  The students will be given a post subject each week.  They will be posting their thoughts on our Twitter board which is located in the back of the room.  One of the Bobcat jobs is to report these "tweets" weekly on the blog.

Our first post topic was on August 20th.

"What are your feelings for the 5th grade year?"

Belen - I am so glad that I am a 5th grader.  This is going to be a gr8 (great) year.  I am in the class of 2013.  I have the most awesome teacher in school.  I love Reading, Math, and Science.  I love to help everyone.

Chris- Omg, I am so excited for 5th grade. I can't wait for the 5th grade year. I can't wait for science with Mrs. Boyd. She is the best 5th grade teacher.

Anastasia- I am so happy that I'm finally in a fifth grade class. I think that the class of 2013 is going to be awesome. I want to learn a lot of hard math this year. LOL!

Daniela- It feels so cool to be a fifth grader. I know it's going to be awesome I want to read a lot of books this year. Before you know it were going to be in middle school! Wish me luck!

Zack- I am hoping that's this is going to be a great year, and I hope to read at least 30 books this year.

Bobcat for the week of September 10th

Way to go Daniella! She volunteered last week to help out with different classroom jobs. She is a wonderful asset to our classroom. Congratulations!

Hi my name is Daniela, I'm ten years old. I like to play soccer, I love pizza, shrimp, lobster, crab, and octopus. I was born in Guatemala. Oh and I love chocolate! I think I was chosen to be Bobcat of the Week because I help my teacher and I help my class mates.

Bobcat for the week of September 3rd

Congratulations to Zach for being a model student in our classroom! He is continually helping others and our classroom family.

What I want my classmates to know about me is that I love to play soccer and tennis. But I don't like to play golf and hockey. For my free time I like to play video games and watch a movie with my mom or my dad. Something that frustrates me is when I have a lot of homework to do that takes me an hour. My favorite foods that I like are pizza, ice cream, Cheetos, and Doritos. My least favorite foods are green beans, pears, oranges, and any other fruit or vegetable. I think I was chosen as weekly bobcat because I keep helping my classmates and Mrs.Boyd. and I just want to help out my class as much as I can!

Mysterious M & M's

Over the past week the students have explored what it is like to think like a scientist. They were handed an M&M and asked to describe it, observe it, split in half and describe, observe it in a variety of different water temperatures, and observe different colors and how they reacted to the water. They were introduced to the Scientific Method and several terms including independent variable and dependent variable. We will be starting to explore the water cycle next week.

Bobcat for the Week of August 27th

Each week a new student will be selected to be the "Bobcat of the Week".  This student will be chosen by going above and beyond what a normal Bobcat displays: Respectful, Peaceful, Responsible, and Safe.
The students' pictures will be placed on the blog with a brief bio about themselves.  Having the honor of being "Bobcat of the Week" allows them several privileges (chosen and discussed among the students):
1.  Be the first to choose a class job.
2.  Homework Pass for one assignment for the week
3.  1st in line for lunch
4.  20 minutes of free time (computer time, reading outside, Legos) with a friend.

Congratulations to Belen for going above and beyond the first week of school.  She was always willing to help everyone, including myself.  It was nice to have such a reliable student the first week of school.  Way to go Belen!!!

My name is Belen.  I am 10.  My house is crowded.  I live with my mom, dad, sister, and grandma.  They are all really helpful.  Well my other grandma works in my school cafeteria, which is awesome!  I enjoy reading and art.  They are both my favorite subject.  I also love to help.  My most favorite thing in the world is that I like to cook.  My mom said I was going to cook for Donald Trump!  She also said I would be the best chef/cook.  So basically, I have told you a lot about my life.

P.S.  I am the first Bobcat of the year.  ;)

I "MUSTACHE" you to 6th grade

The students have really taken to the "mustache" fad that is going on. So... I took it upon myself to be a little creative and play into this by planning a little mustache party. "I 'MUSTACHE' (must pass) you to 6th grade" was the theme. The kids had a blast! We enjoyed our mustaches and the movie "City of Ember" (a novel we just finished reading). I am truly going to miss this "Boyd Bunch".

Mr. Jackson Memorial Service

Yesterday morning, the William Jackson Memorial was dedicated. Margaret Jackson, his wife, and 2 daughters were in attendance. Each student has painted a stone that was placed around the trees. The trees are going to have a cement border around them and the stones will be placed permanently. Due to the dedication being at 7:45, we were asked to have 2 students represent our class and place their stone. Tatiana and Ryan represented our class. All of the teachers were able to attend and enjoy the beautiful music and words that were shared. We hope you get a chance to visit the memorial on your next visit to BCE.
