Parents the students can click on the above link to take them to the lyrics of the song we are singing at the 5th Grade graduation.  The students will need to have this memorized prior to that evening.

Garage Sale

The 5th  grade students here at BCE have been involved in the Economics Unit. Below is the overview of the unit:
This unit will teach the value of money.  It will be a five-week activity beginning on May 1st and ending on June 1st.  Your goal is to accumulate as much money as you possibly can!  Students who earn money will have the option of participating in a “special activity” every Friday.  Your money may also be used at our 5th grade Garage Sale.  Money will be totaled and the top three (3) winners in each 5th grade class will be awarded a pizza party.
RULES:  Each student will be given $25.00 weekly allowance in Big Cypress currency.  Money will be awarded to students who turn in excellent class work, homework and tests.  Students who exhibit helpfulness, good manners, and excellent behavior will earn money.  Money can also be earned from the sale of items at our garage sales.
Students will lose money for late work, poorly completed assignments (neatness counts), immature behavior, or behavior not appropriate for a student almost ready to enter middle school.
Students should keep their money inside their wallets or other safe place.  Stealing is not acceptable behavior and will be dealt with severely.  Keep the money neat – do not write on it or wrinkle it.  It is “legal tender” in the classroom.
rd to receive an “A” on this assignment (Social Studies).

Needless to say, the students have been on their best behavior and earning as much money as they can.  Today was our 1st Garage Sale.  The kids had a blast bringing everything in.  They were to have it labeled prior to coming to school.  Some students even decided to create a business of their own, such as a Nail Salon.  Some of the more creative booths were Cotten Candy, Ice Cream Sundeas, and Ice Pops.  There were even some vendors walking around selling sodas in their rolling coolers.  I had fun watching them sell and buy.  Watching them make change and manage their money was a very valuable lesson for them all.  Below are some moments that were captured.

Tatiana, Sarah, and Aliyah decided to set up their booth.  It was laid out with tons of books and some sodas for sell.
It was fun watching the students take "shifts" to go and shop.
These guys ended up working together and bringing out some more tables.
Sabrina enjoying her "shift" as her partners were shopping.
Sebastian had my favorite snacks...chips that leave residue everywere ;)  I ended up buying a box of chips from him to hand out at our next "Movie and Treat" Friday.
Jenisa kept holding off selling Patrick.  She wanted to give him to the highest bidder.  He ended up being sold for over $300.
Sarah is working hard to sell her merchandise.
This was a business provided from another student outside of our class.  I loved the fact that she had thought to create a "closed" sign for her shopping time.
So...what booths are we going to see next time?  Be creative!!!

Boyd's Bunch @ the Beach

Loaded up and ready to go
Learning about  sea turtles.
Some of the facts that we learned were:
~Baby turtles find their way into the water after they hatch from eggs by the light of the moon.
~There are 7 different types of sea turtles that we discussed today.
~Hunters kill turtles for their meat and their shells.  The meat is used for eating and the shells are used to make jewelry.
~Some turtle shells are used to make ornaments.
~Turtles can confuse trash with live objects.

While on the beach we were involved in a scavenger hunt.  Some of the objects that we found were:
~Kitten's Paw Shells
~A starfish that was living in the water, but had lost 2 of its legs
~Different types of birds and some of their nests
~Crabs living in the sand and the water
~Spiders and their webs
~Moss
~Feather
Here we are trying to check off the scavenger items.

In the picture above, if you look closely you will see the starfish that we found.
One of the tasks that we completed was drawing a background or an object that we learned about or saw.
Just girls!
The students broke up into groups and had to compete in building a sand castle or creation.

Even though it was hot, they had a lot fun creating and getting their hands sandy.
The finished products are below.  Each team had a special feature to their castle/creation.

The above team won the most creative sand creation.

We saw a gopher tortoise on the way back to the pavilion.  In fact, we thought it was after Ryan.
We had a moment to pose for a picture before grabbing lunch.
We were all a little tired afterwards...some more than others!!!!

Today was a very fun day for our class.  After all of the hard work that we have done this year, we deserved the fun we had today.  The students had fun discovering different things on the beach and learning about our natural surrounds.  It was a great field trip to end the year with.
